About Me & Apothecary Torch
Hey!!
I'm Alyssa!...a critical care Registered Nurse, long time fitness enthusiast, NPC competitor, addicted bowhunter, and compelled chandler dedicated to creating invigorating scented candles that help us all escape those often hectic/stressful times in life.
Being an RN this past year during the 2020 pandemic was an unpredictable rollercoaster ride of endless changes daily. One day at work I received a text from a fellow nurse reading...
"IF 2020 WAS A MATH PROBLEM-
If you're going down a river at 2 mph and your canoe loses a wheel, how much pancake mix would you need to re-shingle your roof?"
That pretty much summed up how I, and many other front line workers I'm sure, were feeling. And it made me laugh at the same time...win, win!
Apothecary Torch wasn't constructed out of mistake - it was built as an escape.
On August 10th, 2020, two days after my birthday, I lost my dad to a terminal lung disease that progressed quickly, more quickly than we anticipated. The oldest of three girls, and all three of us being nurses, he was soo proud and loved us unconditionally. He was young, active, and only 65 yrs old. Ten days later my grandma passed away from COVID-19. From a visual timeline perspective, it pretty much stops right there....like everything just froze. I don't remember many days, hours, conversations...but I remember crying a lot, so much so that I felt like I'd never quit.
And I needed an escape.
Increasing my shifts as a nurse during the global pandemic that ultimately took my grandma...probably not an option. I had to find something else.
I love amazing smelling candles...they help me relax. They take me somewhere else. They get me away for just a little bit. I didn't know why it worked that way, but then I learned...
The sense of smell is more closely linked with memory than any of the other senses.
And it all clicked. Those smells I love so much trigger memories - and those memories were helping me feel better, relax, escape. I wanted to learn how to make my own - blend my own scents, choose my own wax.
Diving into candle making became my escape. Creating rich, deep, aromatic scents. Listening to the wooden wicks crackle, watching the beautiful flicker of the flame. The completed candle with smooth, milky white, luxurious coco apricot creme wax...it gives me an escape and I hope it does for you too!
Where did the name Apothecary Torch come from you ask?
Apothecary - the vintage term referring to a person who prepares compounds for healing purposes.
Torch is defined as a burning material, usually handheld, to give light or illumination.
Creating. Guiding. It was perfect, Apothecary Torch.
Creating masterful scented candles has helped me. Every scent is custom mixed by me, nothing you will find on a shelf, and I want to share them with you. To help you escape when life gets hectic, or when a shift at work takes its toll - Blending reminiscent, calming, and evocative scents helping to enlighten and guide you to an escape...to your relaxing moments.
Thank you for being interested!!
